Blog Guide: Best Free WordPress Themes for Beauty Bloggers

WordPress offers tons of free and paid themes for users to choose for their blogs.  Each theme has a variety of different features, widgets, and customizable options, specifically designed for the needs of certain bloggers.  Scroll through to check out some of the best free themes for beauty bloggers and how to use them to your advantage!

Out of the Box. Splendio.

Splendio is an eye catching theme that does not immediately scream ‘beauty blogger,’ but hear me out.  This theme is extremely customizable and puts all the important information right where your readers can find it.  Your title, menu bar, social media links, and search bar are bold and easy to find at the top of you page.  The header image is customizable and can even be set to change for each post and page using the feature image.  You can also set a slider bar with ‘featured posts’ that will rotate through a few posts of your choosing above your latest post.  This is a great way to immediately alert readers of some of your best past work.

Splendio has a ton of potential to help beauty bloggers showcase their work and attract readers, but it will take quite a bit of work.  You need to be willing to choose feature images for each posts if you decide to use that feature.  Also, unless you have the Custom Design upgrade, you may be stuck with a very limited color scheme selection.

Color Explosion. Shine On.

Shine on is a colorful and original theme truly meant to make your content shine.  This theme contains original illustrations and a bright and sunny color scheme, perfect for brightening your readers’ days.  This theme has a unique feature which changes the background color based on which post format you are using.  This makes each post stand out as they contrast against each other.  Check out the demo to see what I’m talking about.

While this theme does great things for your content, it does not allow you to feature much else.  This is a single column theme so there is no sidebar for contact information, social media links, or advertising.  There is room for widgets in the footer but readers will have to scroll all the way down to find it.  If you choose this theme, take advantage of the menu bar and make sure your readers can find any information they may need from there.

Tried and True.  Adelle .

Many beauty bloggers pick the Adelle theme when they are first starting off, and for good reason.  The design is simple but pretty, it has great widgets and customizable features, and a clean, easy to use layout.  This theme includes a customizable background and header, so you can upload your photos and make it your own.  You can also easily integrate your social media profiles using the customizer.  They appear at the top of the sidebar.

The great look and features of this theme seem to be both a blessing and downfall, because you will end up running into many other blogs that look extremely similar to yours.  This will be even more true if you do not use the custom background or header options.  So if you do use the Adelle theme, make sure you learn how to use all the customizable features and really make it your own.

Simple and Clean. Blissful Blog.

The Blissful Blog theme provides a simplicity that I think many beauty bloggers are looking for.  It’s dainty and has clean lines, but it isn’t boring.  It allows you to use your own background image but keep a clean white border around your blog posts.  It also has a beautiful feature slider that can be installed above your latest post, as shown above.  This full width slider can feature your favorite posts and is perfect if you have high quality photographs.

This theme does not have as many bells and whistles as the others, but you can still find ways to feature most of the same widgets and information.  It allows for sidebars on single pages and search views, along with room for three widgets in the footer.  The information just won’t be in your readers’ faces as it is many other blogs.

Do you use any of the themes I discussed here?  How do you take standard templates like these and make them your own?

Blog Guide: How To Add Social Media Icons To Your Posts (Or Anywhere!)

I’ve recently been learning tons of new skills related blogging so I thought I’d try and share a few to help newer bloggers make their blogs shine.  Today I’ll be walking you through the steps to add social media icons, like the ones at the tops of my sidebars, to the bottom of your posts (or basically anywhere you want).

I’ve used the exact process I will teaching you to add some social media buttons to the bottom of this post, so scroll on down to check them out, and click through to see how they work.

Disclaimer: This guide is written for bloggers using WordPress.  If you’re using a different platform, the process should be similar, but let me know if you have any questions.

Step 1. Find your social media icons.

If you google ‘free social media icons’ you will find a ton of options.  I usually look through a list of a whole bunch of free ones until I find one that catches my eye.  This list has some nice options.  Download your icons of choice.

Step 2. Upload your icons to WordPress.

On your WordPress dashboard screen find ‘Media’ in the lefthand column, and then click ‘Add New’.  Use this screen to upload the social media icons you will be using.

Step 3. Find the url for your icons.

After they have uploaded, click on the individual icons to view their details.  In the box in the upper right hand corner you will find the ‘File URL’.  You will need this url for each individual icon so copy and paste them all into a word document or remember how to get back to this page.

Step 4. Place HTML code into post (or sidebar or wherever).

Copy and paste code below wherever you want your icons to appear.  Make sure you replace the bold links with whatever is indicated, whether it is the url for your profile on that site or the icon url we found in step 3.

HTML CODE (replace bold text with your links):

<div><a href="fulltwitterurl"><img title="Twitter" src="twittericonurl" alt="Twitter" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullpinteresturl"><img title="Pinterest" src="pinteresticonurl" alt="Pinterest" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="><img title="Instagram" src="instagramiconurl" alt="Instagram" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullfacebookurl"><img title="Facebook" src="facebookiconurl" alt="Facebook" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="mailto:emailaddress"><img title="Email" src="emailiconurl" alt="Email" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullbloglovinurl"><img title="Bloglovin" src="blogloviniconurl" alt="Bloglovin" width="35" height="35" />

This is an example of how the code for my twitter icon looks.  Make sure you include the full url for both your twitter and the icon.

<a href=”https://www.twitter.com/henryface_”><img title=”Twitter” src=”http://henryfacebeauty.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/twitter-48.png&#8221; alt=”Twitter” width=”35″ height=”35″ /></a>

You can also add additional versions of this code to include icons for RSS feeds, linkedin, etsy shops, pretty much anything you can find an icon for.  You could even create your own icons!

Here is what they code should look like after you paste it with your links.  Make sure you paste it in the ‘text’ tab, not ‘visual’.  After you paste it, switch back to visual and you should be able to see the icons.  If not, something has gone wrong.

I recommend copying and pasting the full code with your individual urls somewhere safe so you can easily find it whenever you want to add your icons somewhere.

So how did we do?  Were you able to follow along?  Any questions along the way?  Please feel free to leave them in the comments or email me using the mail icon below if you need some more personal help.  I would love to start sharing more blogging tips so let me know if this is something you guys are interested in!

500 Followers? Mindblowing.

Somehow my baby beauty blog has managed to accumulate 500 followers over the past few months.  I am honored and amazed that my words go out to over 500 people’s feeds every single day.  I hope you have enjoyed what I have to say, and will continue to come back and check out all of the new things I discover.

I have recently been doing some construction on Seeking Subtle Glow, which you’ve probably noticed if you’ve had the chance to stop by in the past week or so.  Things are still coming together so expect some more edits, but I hope you are pleased with what you see so far.

As my readers, I would love to hear what you have to say about my blog, the content, pretty much anything.  Do you have any questions or ideas for me? Is there something on my blog that just annoys the crap out of you every time you visit?  Let me know!  I read all of the comments that are posted and I would love to hear what you think :)

Check out my Current Deals Page!

current deals

Have you had a chance to check out my ‘current deals‘ page in the top menu of my blog?  This is the page where I compile all of the great deals and sales I find for make up and beauty products.  It includes information about sales, specials, freebies with purchase, and sampler sets for some of your favorite products.  I am constantly updating it so make sure you check it out before making a purchase so you don’t miss out on discounts or free products.

Also, have you heard of a deal that I don’t have listed?  Let me know so I can add it to my page and share the wealth with all of my followers.  I’ll be sure to give you a shoutout too :)

Liebster Awards!

I was recently nominated by two amazing bloggers for the Liebster Award!

The Liebster Award acknowledges up-and-coming bloggers with less than 200 followers and is a great way for all of us to get to know each other a little more! The rules for participating are as follows:

  1. Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you.
  2. Answer 11 questions your nominator asked.
  3. Nominate 10 bloggers (w/ less than 200 followers) that you feel deserve recognition!
  4. Inform the above bloggers that you have nominated them.
  5. Post 11 questions for them to answer.

Because I was nominated twice, I ended up with 22 questions.  Some were similar so I combined a few and then picked a few of the others from each.

Questions from nataliemae87 of Beauty ‘N’ BowWows and Maurissa of Maurissa Sees Beauty:

1. Why did you start your blog?

I started Seeking Subtle Glow because I simply enjoy learning and sharing and writing.  I enjoy the encouraging and creative energy of the blogging world and I thought I could represent myself well in it.  I love make up and beauty, but I love even more to learn about new make up products and techniques and see abilities I didn’t know were possible.  I love finding those awesome things and sharing them along with skills I’ve learned or opinions I’ve gathered.

3. Dogs or cats?

Both!  I grew up with dogs and would love to have them whenever I’m done with the apartment phase of my life.  But for the time being I have two adorable cats that take up their full share of love and affection.  I’m sure I’ll end up sharing some pictures of them at some point :)

4. What are your holy grail beauty products?

I actually just completed a day 8 of the #30daysofbeauty challenge on instagram which was also my holy grail beauty products.  My items for the photo were Smashbox Primer, Anastasia Beverly Hillls Brow Wiz, NYX HD Concealer, and Benefit They’re Real Mascara.  These are my tried and true staples that I can wear with barely anything at all or a full face.

5. Night owl or morning person?

I am definitely a night owl.  With my current schedule I work early afternoon until 10pm, so I don’t really have a choice, but I never been one to jump out of be in the morning.  I love to have my lazy mornings where I can roll out of bed by 9, make some tea, watch some Downton Abbey, and get caught up on all my emails and things before I start the day.

6. What is your favorite beauty brand/product?

My favorite product right now is my LORAC Pro Palette.  It was one of the first high end products I bought for myself when I really started getting into make up.  It has some amazing shades and is super easy to blend, so its perfect for anyone, from the beginner to the professional.  I would also say that LORAC is one of my favorite brands.  I just ordered the new afterGLO palette and can’t wait for it to arrive so I can play with it.

7. Tastiest vegetable?

I love zucchini! Summers are the best when you can get the giant zucchini’s at the store and basically everyone I know is growing them in the garden.  They are super versatile and I have a billion different recipes for them so I can make them any night of the week.  They go well with pretty much any flavor profile too!

8. Where would your dream vacation take place?

I love to travel and have been lucky enough to go to Europe twice in the past five years.  They were both amazing trips and make me want to see even more amazing places.  I would love to go to Ireland, Germany, Japan, South Korea, India, I could really do on and on.  I realistically plan on going pack to Europe at least one more time in my lifetime, and hopefully checking out a few Asian countries at some point.

9. What is the color you wear most often?

Navy blue.  I have a strong love for neutrals and they make up most of my wardrobe, but navy blue is my favorite by far.  It matches pretty much anything but is at least a bit more exciting than black, grey, or brown.  The number of navy and white striped shirts I own is really astounding.  I must have 8-10 by now in various styles but I am still immediately drawn to them in any store I am in.  I guess you just have to go with what works for you.

10. What is the TV show you watch most often?

I watch way too many tv shows.  I am definitely way more into tv than movies and I will give pretty much any show a chance to grab my attention with the first episode.  Right now I’m watching Game of Thrones, The Mindy Project, Parks and Recreation, Under the Gunn, Deadbeat, and Offspring.

11. Favorite summer activity?

I love being outdoors during the summer and one of my favorite activities is kayaking.  There is a canoe livery near my apartment where you can rent kayaks for the day and paddle up and down the river.  Its a beautiful area and it’s so fun to pack a picnic and spend the day on the water and enjoying the weather.

My nominees:

(I honestly don’t know if these people have under 200 followers.  These are just some of my favorite people)

My questions for the nominees:

1. Why did you start your blog?
2. What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
3. Glossy or matte lips?
4. Jelly or jam?
5. Have you ever had bangs?
6. What beauty product can you not live without?
7. What is you favorite kind of hat?
8. Do you have any pets?
9. What is your favorite piece of clothing you own?
10. What is your goal for you blog?
11. What is one thing your readers should know about you?

Good luck to all of the nominees and thanks again to nataliemae87 and Maurissa!

Thank you for visiting my new blog!  While it is still in it’s humble beginnings, I am so excited about the future currently planned for it.

My love and knowledge of make up and beauty has recently grown to a point where I feel that I can help others that were in a similar position to me just a few months ago.  So much beauty advice out there tells you how to look fierce and hot for a big night out, but sometimes you just want to feel good about your skin and face for a normal day at work and home.  I love taking inspiration from those talented and over the top make up artists and beauty bloggers, and making them more easy to understand for the everyday girl.

My hope is for readers to be able to visit my blog for tips on how to practice and perfect make up basics such as eyebrows, winged liners, and the perfect red lip, get reviews on both drug store and high end products they’re interested in, and gain inspiration to create their own beautiful face creations for everyday use.

Please feel free to contact me by email at henryfacebeauty@gmail.com or on any of my social networking sites listed under the (♥) icon at the top of the page with any questions or inquiries.
