Blog Guide: Best Free WordPress Themes for Beauty Bloggers

WordPress offers tons of free and paid themes for users to choose for their blogs.  Each theme has a variety of different features, widgets, and customizable options, specifically designed for the needs of certain bloggers.  Scroll through to check out some of the best free themes for beauty bloggers and how to use them to your advantage!

Out of the Box. Splendio.

Splendio is an eye catching theme that does not immediately scream ‘beauty blogger,’ but hear me out.  This theme is extremely customizable and puts all the important information right where your readers can find it.  Your title, menu bar, social media links, and search bar are bold and easy to find at the top of you page.  The header image is customizable and can even be set to change for each post and page using the feature image.  You can also set a slider bar with ‘featured posts’ that will rotate through a few posts of your choosing above your latest post.  This is a great way to immediately alert readers of some of your best past work.

Splendio has a ton of potential to help beauty bloggers showcase their work and attract readers, but it will take quite a bit of work.  You need to be willing to choose feature images for each posts if you decide to use that feature.  Also, unless you have the Custom Design upgrade, you may be stuck with a very limited color scheme selection.

Demo of Splendio.

Color Explosion. Shine On.

Shine on is a colorful and original theme truly meant to make your content shine.  This theme contains original illustrations and a bright and sunny color scheme, perfect for brightening your readers’ days.  This theme has a unique feature which changes the background color based on which post format you are using.  This makes each post stand out as they contrast against each other.  Check out the demo to see what I’m talking about.

While this theme does great things for your content, it does not allow you to feature much else.  This is a single column theme so there is no sidebar for contact information, social media links, or advertising.  There is room for widgets in the footer but readers will have to scroll all the way down to find it.  If you choose this theme, take advantage of the menu bar and make sure your readers can find any information they may need from there.

Tried and True.  Adelle .

Many beauty bloggers pick the Adelle theme when they are first starting off, and for good reason.  The design is simple but pretty, it has great widgets and customizable features, and a clean, easy to use layout.  This theme includes a customizable background and header, so you can upload your photos and make it your own.  You can also easily integrate your social media profiles using the customizer.  They appear at the top of the sidebar.

The great look and features of this theme seem to be both a blessing and downfall, because you will end up running into many other blogs that look extremely similar to yours.  This will be even more true if you do not use the custom background or header options.  So if you do use the Adelle theme, make sure you learn how to use all the customizable features and really make it your own.

Simple and Clean. Blissful Blog.

The Blissful Blog theme provides a simplicity that I think many beauty bloggers are looking for.  It’s dainty and has clean lines, but it isn’t boring.  It allows you to use your own background image but keep a clean white border around your blog posts.  It also has a beautiful feature slider that can be installed above your latest post, as shown above.  This full width slider can feature your favorite posts and is perfect if you have high quality photographs.

This theme does not have as many bells and whistles as the others, but you can still find ways to feature most of the same widgets and information.  It allows for sidebars on single pages and search views, along with room for three widgets in the footer.  The information just won’t be in your readers’ faces as it is many other blogs.

Do you use any of the themes I discussed here?  How do you take standard templates like these and make them your own?

Glow Guide: Samantha Ravndahl

The internet has done amazing things for bringing together those with similar passions and has allowed make up artists to connect with everyday women like never before.  At any time I am able to head over to youtube and see step by step tutorials  by amazingly talented women in order to learn and grow my own personal beauty knowledge.  I consider these women my glow guides. They have helped me figure out how to find my own confident glow, whether it be from the actual make up I’m wearing or the feeling of finally getting getting my eyebrows to look even.  Check out one of my favorites, Samantha Ravndahl, and some of her best tutorials below.

Samantha Ravndahl is the creator of batalashbeauty, a blog and youtube channel that has quickly rose to fame over the past year.  Samantha has training and experience in all kinds of make up, including special effects, beauty, and fantasy, and has a very unique and entertaining style.  My favorite part of most of her videos is that her reasoning for most of her make up choices is simply because she wants to.  I believe that this is exactly what make up is about.  I wore green eyeliner today because I felt like wearing green eyeliner.  No ulterior motives or grand plans.  I saw the green pencil, it looked super fun, I put it on.  Make up.

Check out some of my favorite tutorials by Samantha below!

You can follow Samantha on instagram and twitter to hear and see more from her!

Blog Guide: How To Add Social Media Icons To Your Posts (Or Anywhere!)

I’ve recently been learning tons of new skills related blogging so I thought I’d try and share a few to help newer bloggers make their blogs shine.  Today I’ll be walking you through the steps to add social media icons, like the ones at the tops of my sidebars, to the bottom of your posts (or basically anywhere you want).

I’ve used the exact process I will teaching you to add some social media buttons to the bottom of this post, so scroll on down to check them out, and click through to see how they work.

Disclaimer: This guide is written for bloggers using WordPress.  If you’re using a different platform, the process should be similar, but let me know if you have any questions.

Step 1. Find your social media icons.

If you google ‘free social media icons’ you will find a ton of options.  I usually look through a list of a whole bunch of free ones until I find one that catches my eye.  This list has some nice options.  Download your icons of choice.

Step 2. Upload your icons to WordPress.

On your WordPress dashboard screen find ‘Media’ in the lefthand column, and then click ‘Add New’.  Use this screen to upload the social media icons you will be using.

Step 3. Find the url for your icons.

After they have uploaded, click on the individual icons to view their details.  In the box in the upper right hand corner you will find the ‘File URL’.  You will need this url for each individual icon so copy and paste them all into a word document or remember how to get back to this page.

Step 4. Place HTML code into post (or sidebar or wherever).

Copy and paste code below wherever you want your icons to appear.  Make sure you replace the bold links with whatever is indicated, whether it is the url for your profile on that site or the icon url we found in step 3.

HTML CODE (replace bold text with your links):

<div><a href="fulltwitterurl"><img title="Twitter" src="twittericonurl" alt="Twitter" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullpinteresturl"><img title="Pinterest" src="pinteresticonurl" alt="Pinterest" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="><img title="Instagram" src="instagramiconurl" alt="Instagram" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullfacebookurl"><img title="Facebook" src="facebookiconurl" alt="Facebook" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="mailto:emailaddress"><img title="Email" src="emailiconurl" alt="Email" width="35" height="35" /></a><a href="fullbloglovinurl"><img title="Bloglovin" src="blogloviniconurl" alt="Bloglovin" width="35" height="35" />

This is an example of how the code for my twitter icon looks.  Make sure you include the full url for both your twitter and the icon.

<a href=””><img title=”Twitter” src=”; alt=”Twitter” width=”35″ height=”35″ /></a>

You can also add additional versions of this code to include icons for RSS feeds, linkedin, etsy shops, pretty much anything you can find an icon for.  You could even create your own icons!

Here is what they code should look like after you paste it with your links.  Make sure you paste it in the ‘text’ tab, not ‘visual’.  After you paste it, switch back to visual and you should be able to see the icons.  If not, something has gone wrong.

I recommend copying and pasting the full code with your individual urls somewhere safe so you can easily find it whenever you want to add your icons somewhere.

So how did we do?  Were you able to follow along?  Any questions along the way?  Please feel free to leave them in the comments or email me using the mail icon below if you need some more personal help.  I would love to start sharing more blogging tips so let me know if this is something you guys are interested in!

Subtle Stila In The Know Look

I put together this quick pictorial of a look I created the other day using the Stila In The Know palette.  My boyfriend bought this for me when it was on sale at Ulta earlier this year for half off.   I love all the earthy matte shades!

This look is super easy to do and only includes three shades.  It is quite subtle and just gives you a nice orangey shadow in your crease.  Fire is my favorite shade in this palette and I have a hard time resisting it whenever I choose to use the In The Know palette

1. Sweep Day over your eyelid starting from the middle, towards the outer corner.

2. Start adding some Fire to the outer corner and blend forward.

3. Add some Earth in the crease and along the lashline in the outer corner and blend out.

4. Finish with eye liner and mascara (I used NYX gel liner and Benefit They’re Real mascara)

That’s it!   This look is super simple and most of your time is spent just blending everything together.  This step is very important though so make sure you have the time to blend properly!

Let me know how you liked this pictorial!  Are there any other looks you’d like to see?
